Location The Painted Monastery Moldovita–
Moldovita Monastery, situated in the commune of Vatra Moldovitei, Suceava County, Moldavia, Romania, has a mysterious origin that is said to date back to the time of the Musatini voivodes. It was built in 1532 by Petru Rares, illegitimate son of Stephen III of Moldavia, as a defense against the Muslim Ottoman conquerors from the East.
Today, the monastery's museum preserves manuscripts from the 15th century, providing insights into the way the monastery school was organized and the cultural activity in general. The monastery's courtyard is filled with lovely flowers, creating a beautiful environment to appreciate the frescoes and the surrounding scenery.
The outside walls of the monastery depict historical, religious, and cultural scenes, with unique colors and tones used in each of the monasteries. Moldovita is famous for its yellow color, while Voronet has blue, Sucevita has red-green, Humor has red, and Arbore has green. The frescoes have been well preserved for over 500 years, a mystery that continues to intrigue visitors.
